The Art of Networking Like a Boss
Hi Techies 👋
How has your week been? Regardless of how things went, I am sure you are delighted the weekend is here!
Another weekend filled with amazing events. Don't just attend to fulfill obligations; make it worth your time by making new connections.
If you’re like me and find it a bit awkward talking to people at first, you’re not alone. I always get tongue-tied when speaking to people but my voice resonates loudly when gisting with my friends. Lol, I bet that is the case with almost everyone. Networking can feel intimidating, especially when you're shy.
We all ask questions like how do I build a career in tech, how can I get to work on exciting projects, how do I increase my income? At the core of all these questions are two essential elements: have/learn skills and people.
Having the right skill set is crucial. Focus on acquiring both technical skills and soft skills. Online courses, workshops, and hands-on projects are great ways to boost your abilities.
Building connections with your skills can open you up to many opportunities. Being in the right place will get you far! Take it from me, I got my previous role by pitching myself. Networking helps you discover opportunities, gain insights from experienced professionals, and collaborate on projects.
Networking IRL (In Real Life)
1. Be Authentic and Confident
Remember when Billie Eilish broke the internet with a “not your typical pop star” vibe? Channel that energy! And if you don't know who Billie Eilish is then you have some research to do. What I am saying is be yourself in every interaction- people vibe with the real you and like my friend says eat audacity day and night so you can come across as confident.
2. Be Prepared
Have an objective when you are walking into a room, know the people who are attending, and research the people you would like to talk to. Have a few engaging conversation starters and also do not forget to listen actively.
3. Pitch, but Make It TikTok
Your introduction should be as engaging as a TikTok video! Keep it short, fun, and memorable. Use a catchy hook like complimenting their work/ style/ fashion accessory, come from a place of genuine interest, share what you do, and end with a question.
4. Slide into DMs Like a Pro
Networking isn’t just about LinkedIn! Use platforms like Instagram and Twitter to connect with industry peeps. Send thoughtful DMs (not just “Hey!” messages, please 😒😂) referencing their work or a shared interest also Humor breaks the ice who wouldn’t want to connect over a laugh? Just think of it as your version of a collab!
5) Follow Up
After meeting someone new, don’t forget to follow up! Send a friendly message. It keeps the conversation going and shows you value the connection.
The bottom line is that you need to be at the right place and that is why I love community events, you make connections to your next job, and projects, or even meet amazing sisters. How about practicing one or two formulas at the WeTech Flagship Conference at Landmark Event Centre, if you haven't saved a seat then do so. Let's connect!
RSVP for your ticket here. Remember, every connection has the potential to open doors you didn’t even know existed.
